Dealer Auto Transport: How Dealerships Move Inventory Faster (Without the Headaches)

For a dealership, transport isn't a side task. It's part of how fast inventory turns. A unit stuck at auction, a dealer trade waiting on a truck or a sold car that hasn't reached the buyer all cost money every day they sit.

This guide covers what dealers should expect from an auto transport partner and how to set up a process that keeps units moving.

What dealers actually need from a transport partner

Most used car managers and inventory buyers say the same things:

  • Reliable pickups. A carrier that shows up in the window they promised.
  • One point of contact. No chasing three dispatchers to find a unit.
  • Clean documentation. A condition report at pickup and delivery, every time.
  • Verified carriers. Licensed, insured trucks, checked before every load.
  • Flexibility. Running and non-running units, open and enclosed, one car or many.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to.

The shipments dealers move most often

Auction purchases

Manheim, ADESA, Copart, IAA and online auctions all have release and storage deadlines. We pick up with your gate pass and release documents and deliver to your lot, including inoperable units.

Dealer-to-dealer trades

When a customer wants a specific trim or color that another store has, timing decides the deal. We move dealer trades quickly, with inspections documented at both ends.

Retail delivery to out-of-state buyers

Online and remote sales are now normal. Door-to-door delivery to your buyer's driveway lets you close deals beyond your local market, and tracking keeps the buyer informed.

Wholesale and aged inventory

Moving aged units to another rooftop or a different market can be the difference between a wholesale loss and a retail sale.

Open vs. enclosed for dealer inventory

Open transport handles the large majority of dealer moves. It's economical and widely available on major lanes.

Enclosed transport is worth it for high-line, exotic, classic or low-clearance inventory, or when the delivery itself is part of a premium customer experience. See enclosed auto transport.

How carrier vetting works

United Auto Transport is a licensed property broker. We work only with independently licensed and insured carriers, and before a carrier takes your unit we:

  • Check DOT and MC authority directly with the FMCSA
  • Verify the carrier's insurance before pickup
  • Require a documented inspection on the Bill of Lading (BOL) at pickup and delivery

If a claim is ever needed, that BOL record is what protects you. Read about carrier liability.

Volume and recurring lanes

If you're moving units every week (from the same auction, between the same rooftops, or into the same markets), a recurring lane plan makes everything easier:

  • Predictable pickup days
  • Faster dispatch because we already know your locations and contacts
  • One standard process for documentation and invoicing

Tell us your typical monthly volume and your most common origins and destinations, and we'll build a plan around them.

How to start working with us

  1. Call or request a callback. Tell us about your store, your volume and your typical lanes.
  2. Send your first unit. Year, make, model, VIN, pickup and delivery addresses, and running condition.
  3. We dispatch a verified carrier and keep you updated through delivery.
  4. Review the delivery inspection and BOL, and you're done.

See how the process works.
