What Is a Bill of Lading (BOL) in Car Shipping, and Why It Protects You
The Bill of Lading (BOL) is your car's condition record. What it includes, how to inspect at pickup and delivery, and what to do if there's damage.
When you hand your car to a carrier, you're trusting a stranger with something valuable. The Bill of Lading (BOL) is the document that makes that trust official. It records your car's condition, confirms the carrier received it, and becomes your most important piece of evidence if anything goes wrong.
The BOL in plain English
The Bill of Lading is three things at once:
- A receipt. The carrier confirms it picked up your vehicle.
- A condition report. Existing scratches, dents and chips are marked at pickup.
- A delivery record. You sign at delivery to confirm the car arrived, and note anything new.
What's on a BOL
- Your name and the pickup and delivery addresses
- Vehicle year, make, model and VIN
- A vehicle diagram where the driver marks existing damage
- Odometer reading (on many BOLs)
- Carrier information
- Signatures and dates at pickup and delivery
Pickup inspection: step by step
- Wash the car beforehand. Dirt hides scratches.
- Walk around the car with the driver. Check every panel, the bumpers, the roof and the wheels.
- Make sure every existing mark is on the diagram. If you see something the driver missed, ask them to add it.
- Take your own dated photos, including close-ups of any existing damage.
- Read before you sign, and keep your copy.
Delivery inspection: what to check before signing
This is the step people rush, and the one that matters most.
- Inspect the car before you sign, even if it's dark or raining. Use a flashlight if needed.
- Compare the car to your pickup BOL and your photos.
- Check the roof, the lower bumpers and under the front lip, where damage is easy to miss.
- Write any new damage on the BOL before you sign, and photograph it with the driver present.
Signing a clean BOL at delivery generally confirms the car arrived in the same condition. That's why noting damage at delivery is so important.
If you find damage
- Note it on the BOL and have the driver acknowledge it.
